Wiki - Can I Insert a Link to Network Location in a Wikitext Field?

Description

Is it possible to insert a link to a network location in a Wikitext field? For example, a hyperlink that, when clicked, opens the network location \\files.shared.com\data ?

Observed on

  • codebeamer 22.04 (FELICITY)

Solution

Network drive mapping in hyperlinks is prevented due to security reasons.

Alternative Approach

A possible way around this issue is complex, however, still achievable. The network drive shall be mapped locally to, for example, letter E:, then the link should point to file:///E://.

For example:

[\\files.shared.com\data|file:///E://global]

Note: Even in the above case, the action of opening the drive from the link will be blocked by the browser. At that point,

  1. either right-click on the link ► Copy Link ► open a new browser tab ► paste the link in the address bar and press Enter
  2. or, modify the browser's settings/use external third-party solutions so to be able to open the network link when clicking on it.
Anything in direction of method 2 can be unsafe and exposes the used environment to security risks, therefore, only proceed after discussing with your Security Team.
